Unique Characters: In juveniles, anterior dorsal-fin spines distinctly elongate. Dorsal- and anal-fin lobes both greatly elongate in specimens greater than 20 mm fork length. Small juveniles with 4 or 5 faint, interrupted bands on sides. Anterior profile of head nearly straight, without a slight concavity in front of eyes. Body superficially naked, scales minute and embedded where present. Adults with pelvic fins short, about 1/4 to 1/2 upper jaw length.

Similar Species:

Atlantic Moonfish Selene setapinnis. Dorsal- and anal-fin lobes only slightly or not elongate. Faint dark blotch on opercle upper caudal peduncle. Small juveniles with an oval black spot over straight part of lateral line. Anterior profile of head curved with a slight concavity in front of eyes. Body superficially naked, scales minute and embedded where present. Adults with pelvic fins short, about 1/4 to 1/2 upper jaw length. In juveniles, anterior dorsal-fin spines distinctly elongate.
