All Coryphaenoides Species: Anus not surrounded by a broad margin of naked black skin, located immediately anterior to anal fin (separated by 1 or 2 rows of scales at most). Branchiostegal rays 6. Spinous second ray of first dorsal fin serrated. Pelvic-fin rays 8-14 (rarely 7). Head covering tough, opaque, mostly covered with spinulated scales. No lens on chest or in front of anus. No gular striations.

Mandible with a single row of teeth. Spinules or scales disposed in slightly diverging rows. Head scaled except for gular and branchiostegal membranes, lower surface of snout and sub orbital region, lunate area on either side of the snout.
