Derichthys serpentinus
Unique Characteristics: Snout and lower jaw short, snout approximately equal to eye diameter. Tip of snout not produced and spatulate, extends beyond lower jaw by a distance less than eye diameter. Constricted neck, and a series of short, longitudinal dermal ridges on the head (presumably sensory in nature).
Similar Species: Spoonbill Eel, Nessorhamphus ingolfianus. Snout and lower jaw long, 3-6 times eye diameter. Tip of snout produced and spatulate, extends beyond lower jaw by a distance equal to or greater than eye diameter. Lacks dermal ridges, and its neck is not constricted.
