All Psenes Species: Origin of dorsal fin before, or directly over in large specimens, insertion of pectoral fins. No scales on top of head forward of eyes. Body usually deep (maximum depth about 2.5 times in length or less), but elongate in large specimens.

Unique Characteristics: Lower jaw teeth long, compressed, contiguous, very different from those in upper jaw. Body color mottled or spotted (in young specimens) or uniformly dark brown.
