All Epigonus Species: One bony or poorly ossified opercular spine (sometimes absent).Anal fin with 1 or 2 spines and 9 or 10 (rarely 8) rays. Edges of infraorbital bones smooth. Anal fin with 2 spines and 9 segmented rays. First dorsal-fin spines 7 or 8. Maxilla reaching well beyond vertical through anterior margin of eye. Gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14 or more.
