All Vinciguerria Species: Two ORB photophores, 1 anteroventral, 1 midventral to posteroventral to eye. Premaxillary teeth uniserial. Anal-fin origin beneath or close behind last dorsal-fin ray base. BR photophores 8 or 9. Anal- and dorsal-fin bases about equal in length; anal-fin rays 12-16. AC photophores 12-16, with 6 or 7 over anal fin (FAO 2002).

Unique Characteristics: SO present. Premaxilla with 6-10 small, subequal teeth.
Similar Species:
Vinciguerria attenuata, Slender Lightfish
Slender Lightfish, Vinciguerria attenuata. SO absent. Premaxilla with 3 or 4 long teeth and a few smaller ones. Total GR 19-22. Eyes slightly tubular. No dark streak at lower jaw symphysis.

Highseas Lightfish, Vinciguerria poweriae. SO absent. Premaxilla with 3 or 4 long teeth and a few smaller ones. Total GR 14-16. Eyes normal, lateral. Dark streak at lower jaw symphysis.
