All Lepophidium Species: No barbels on snout and chin. Scales cycloid. Median basibranchial tooth patches present or absent. All body scales in regularly overlapping rows; posterior part of head extensively scaled (FAO 2002).

Unique Characteristics: Body with pattern of spots, bars, or blotches. Body with pale markings on darker background. Upper half of body with pale mottling; pectoral fin with dark upper edge, at least basally; dorsal-fin rays 117–122; anal-fin rays 95–101 (Robins et al. 2012).

Body with a single row of pale spots along the entire length (may be difficult to see in older preserved material). Pectoral fin without dark dorsal margin. Dorsal-fin rays 129–142; anal-fin rays 109–121 (Robins et al. 2012).
Lepophidium staurophor, Barred Cusk-eel

Barred Cusk-eel, Lepophidium staurophor. Body with pattern of spots, bars, or blotches. Body with dark markings on paler background. Upper portion of body crossed by broad dark bands with pale outlines (Robins et al. 2012).
