Sebastes mentella
Unique Characteristics: Bright dark red to violet, belly rosy to pale pink; often with dusky patch on opercle. Body compressed. Symphyseal knob well developed and sharply projecting. Eye diameter greater than snout length. Lowest preopercular spine directed obliquely forward and downward. Soft dorsal and anal fins rounded, caudal fin truncate to slightly emarginate. Anal fin with 7–11, usually 9, rays (following 3 stiff spines). Pectoral fin rays usually 19 or less. Body covered with ctenoid scales. On the lateral line, 32–40 pored scales, typically 34. More than 55 oblique scale rows below the lateral line (Andriashev 1954, Barsukov et al. 1984, Hureau and Litvinenko 1986, Ishida 1995) (Mecklenburg et al. 2018).
