Reinhardtius hippoglossoides
Unique Characteristics: Eyed side blackish, grayish, or yellow brown; paler on blind side. Mouth large; upper jaw extends to posterior margin of lower eye. Eyes widely separated. Lateral line straight over pectoral fin (Kells and Carpenter 2011).
Eyed side dark purplish brown to black. Blind side dark. Bold black and white bars present on dorsal and anal fins in small juveniles. Body elongate. Lower jaw large, projecting. Upper eye visible from blind side. Interorbital space flat. Mouth large, symmetrical, maxilla extending to below posterior part of eye or beyond eye. Preopercle with right angle at posterior margin and 4 or 5 pores near edge. Anal spine absent. Dorsal fin origin at rear of or beyond upper eye. Caudal fin truncate or slightly emarginate. Lateral line nearly straight, slightly sloping above pectoral fin. Scales small, cycloid (smooth). Gill rakers short and blunt. Pharyngeal teeth large, in a single row (Hubbs and Wilimovsky 1964, Mecklenburg et al. 2002) (Mecklenburg et al. 2018).
