All Dasyscopelus Species: Photophores always present; caudal peduncle with SCO and ICO, supracaudal and/or infracaudal luminous plates or patches, sometimes coalesced, or without caudal organs and luminous patches. VLO, SAO3 and uppermost Pol below or only slightly above lateral line, well below dorsal contour of body; 2 or more Prc, with Prc2 never far above lateral line.Two Prc, always separate from AO. PLO more than its diameter above level of upper end of pectoral-fin base. VO series level; PVO series on an inclined line, with PVO1 more than its diameter below level of PVO2. One Pol. SAO series in straight or slightly angulate line, with SAO1 behind vertical through VO3.Prc2 more than 2 photophore diameters below lateral line; Prc1- Prc2 interspace about 2 or more in AOp-Prc1 interspace; PLO more than 3 photophore diameters below lateral line (FAO 2020).

Body elongate, with body depth 3.8 times or more in Standard Length; SCO present in males, very rarely in females; ICO present in females, very rarely in males. Line though centers of SAO1 and SAO2 passing closer to VO2 than VO3, or farther anteriorly. Scales distinctly spinoid (FAO 2020).

Body elongate, with body depth 3.8 times or more in Standard Length; SCO present in males, very rarely in females; ICO present in females, very rarely in males. Line through centers of SAO1 and SAO2 passing through or behind VO3. Scales cycloid; posterodorsal margin of opercle serrate in specimens over 30 mm standard length (FAO 2020).
