Unique Characters: Dorsal fin usually with 5 or 6 spines and 14 rays. Distance from the center of the eye to the origin of the dorsal fin is usually longer than the length of the dorsal fin base. Usually dark vertical bars on the sides.
Similar Species:
Black Crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus. Dorsal fin usually with 7 or 8 spines and 14-16 rays. Distance from the center of the eye to the origin of the dorsal fin is about equal to the length of the dorsal fin base. Sides are usually mottled.
