Unique Characters:  Stocky body with dark chin barbels.  Pectoral spines with poorly developed “teeth.”  Caudal fin base with rectangular pale area.   Total gill rakers on first arch typically 17-29.  Body not mottled.

Similar Species:  

Brown Bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus.  Pectoral spines with well-developed “teeth” (serrations).  Caudal fin base uniformly dusky.  Total gill rakers on first arch typically 13-15.  Body often mottled.
