Unique Characteristics: Belly and interpelvic area with 1 or more highly modified (enlarged, often strong-spined) modified scales. Mouth inferior; snout conical and pig-like. Sides with 10 ovoid bars that do not cross the back. Soft dorsal fin with 15-17 rays. Restricted to the Roanoke basin.
