Unique Characters: A well-defined spot at base of the dorsal fin, eight dorsal fin rays, and 52-58 lateral line scales. Small, flap-like barbel in groove near corner of large, terminal mouth. Dorsal fin origin well behind pelvic fin origin.

Sandhills Chub Semotilus lumbee. Lacks a well-defined black spot at anterior base of dorsal fin, nine dorsal fin rays, and 46-50 lateral line scales.

Nocomis species. Readily-seen conical barbel at corner of mouth and dorsal fin origin over pelvic fin origin as opposed to behind the pelvic fin origin.
