Unique Characters: Body brownish. Dorsal and anal fins with well-defined black borders. Jaw teeth in bands. Body moderately elongate. Mouth horizontal or slightly oblique. Snout length only slightly less than, to somewhat greater than diameter of eye. Anterior nostrils free. Pectoral fin well developed; caudal fin present though sometimes reduced. Preanal length usually greater than 40% total length. Caudal fin short and tip of tail stiff. Posterior nostril below mideye level. Dorsal- and anal-fin rays unsegmented. Flange present on upper lip. Upper end of gill opening at middle of pectoral-fin base.
Similar Species: Margintail Conger Paraconger caudilimbatus. Dorsal, caudal, and anal fins dusky with pale edges. Jaw teeth in 1 or 2 series, forming a cutting edge. Body moderately elongate. Mouth horizontal or slightly oblique. Snout length only slightly less than, to somewhat greater than diameter of eye. Anterior nostrils free. Pectoral fin well developed; caudal fin present though sometimes reduced. Preanal length usually greater than 40% total length. Caudal fin short and tip of tail stiff.
