Unique Characters: Body brownish with bronze reflections. Dark bars radiate from eyes. Scales on body cycloid. Median predorsal scales absent. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. Pectoral-fin rays 14 (rarely 13 or 15).

Similar Species: Bigtooth Cardinalfish Apogon affinis. Body generally salmon pink. Dusky stripe from snout tip through eye. Scales on body cycloid to weakly ctenoid. Median predorsal scales present. Posterior margin of preopercle serrate. Pectoral-fin soft rays 11 or 12 (rarely 13). Membraneous ventral preopercular flap not extending beyond posterior preopercle edge. Inner pelvic-fin ray mostly free from body Segmented anal-fin rays 9. Both jaws with a single series of small conical teeth interspersed with several enlarged caniniform teeth.
