Benthocometes robustus

Unique Characteristics: No barbels on snout and chin. Scales cycloid. 1 median basibranchial tooth patches. Pelvic fins not longer than head, placed below preopercle, close together, each with 1 or 2 well-developed rays. Pectoral fins entire, placed closer to midline than to ventral edge. Head more or less inflated; length about 1/2 preanal length. Mouth subterminal or terminal. Eyes and orbit large with developed lens present. Opercular spine straight, strong, and narrow, sometimes hidden, usually rounded in cross-section. Body depth at anus 8.5 times or less in standard length. Caudal fin with 8 or more rays.
