Unique Characters: Dorsal fin dark. Pectoral and pelvic fins translucent. Vertical fins scaled, relatively rigid. Upper caudal fin lobe longer than lower lobe in adults; considerably longer than lower in juveniles. Anal fin usually with 26-28 rays; 27-32 rays reported in Atlantic specimens. Dorsal and anal fins not broadly expanded. Scales along at least part of the length of the rays. No modified sheath at base of median fins. Transverse precaudal grooves absent. Upper dorsal fin lobe relatively low. Area between eyes arched.

Atlantic Pomfret Brama brama. Vertical fins scaled, rigid. Lower jaw protrudes. Area between eyes prominently arched. No keel on caudal peduncle. Margins of dorsal, caudal, and anal fins blackish. Pectoral fin margins transparent. Anal fin usually with 30 rays. Dorsal and anal fins not broadly expanded. Scales along at least part of the length of the rays. No modified sheath at base of median fins. Transverse precaudal grooves absent. Dorsal fin moderately tall. Caudal fin lobes similarly shaped.

Carribean Pomfret Brama caribbea.Dark brown to coppery. Membranes of dorsal and anal fins black. Inside of mouth black, Lower jaw protrudes. Vertical fins scaled, rigid. Upper lobe of caudal fin considerably longer than lower lobe. Dorsal and anal fins not broadly expanded. Scales along at least part of the length of the rays. No modified sheath at base of median fins. Transverse precaudal grooves absent.
