Note: The Florida Blenny and the Striped Benny, Chasmodes bosquianus, are the only two blennies in North Carolina that do not have cirri on their heads. Cirri are eyebrow-looking appendages on top of the head usually above the eyes.

Similar Species: Striped Benny, Chasmodes bosquianus. Lower jaw without prominent lip flaps (Figure b). Segmented caudal-fin soft rays 10 or 11. Pectoral-fin soft rays usually 12. Dorsal-fin spines usually 11.
