All Coelorinchus Species: Anus not surrounded by a broad margin of naked black skin, located immediately anterior to anal fin (separated by 1 or 2 rows of scales at most). Branchiostegal rays 6. Spinous second ray of first dorsal fin smooth. Snout pointed with spiny terminal scute and coarsely scaled head ridges. Pelvic-fin rays 7.

Unique Characteristics: Underside of head almost entirely scaled except for median swath on underside of snout. A prominent black naked fossa on chest. Body scales covered with short, fine spinules, none enlarged. Terminal scute of snout short and stubby, projecting little beyond lateral scutes.

Blackfin Grenadier, Caelorinchus caribbaeus. Underside of head almost entirely scaled except for median swath on underside of snout. A prominent black naked fossa on chest. Body scales covered with short, fine spinules, none enlarged. Terminal scute of snout lanceolate, projecting far beyond lateral scutes.
