Unique Characters: Last dorsal-fin ray filamentous. Body silver to brassy with 6-8 dark stripes on upper side. Mouth subterminal (snout bulbous and fleshy, projecting past upper jaw). Anal-fin rays 25 or more. More than 50 (52-70) scales in lateral series. Upper jaw with deep median notch.
Similar Species: Threadfin Shad Dorosoma petenense. Last dorsal-fin ray filamentous. Caudal fin golden yellow. No dark stripes on sides. Mouth terminal (snout more pointed and not extending anterior to upper jaw). Anal-fin rays 25 or fewer. Fewer than 50 (41-48) scales in lateral series. Upper jaw with deep median notch.
