Unique Characters: Pectoral fins very long, reaching beyond anal-fin base to or almost to caudal-fin base. Pectoral branch of lateral line absent. Pelvic fins short, not reaching anal-fin origin (barely reaching in juveniles), inserted nearer to pectoral-fin insertion than anal-fin origin. Juveniles not barbelled. Gill rakers on the first gill arch 29-37 (usually 32-34). 6 or 7 (usually 6.5) scales in transverse row between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line; juveniles elongated.

Similar Species: Oceanic Two-wing Flyingfish Exocoetus obtusirostris. Pectoral fins very long, reaching beyond anal-fin base to or almost to caudal-fin base. Pectoral branch of lateral line absent. Pelvic fins short, not reaching anal-fin origin (barely reaching in juveniles), inserted nearer to pectoral-fin insertion than anal-fin origin. Juveniles not barbelled. Gill rakers on first gill arch 22-29 (usually 25-27). 7 or 8 (usually 7.5) scales in transverse row between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line. Juveniles hump-backed.
