Gempylus serpens

Unique Characters: Body elongate. Jaws pointed, lower jaw protrudes and has a fleshy tip. Lateral line bifurcated. No midventral keel on belly. 5-7 finlets behind both dorsal and anal fins. Dorsal-fin elements, including finlets, less than 55. Distance from anus to anal-fin origin much shorter than snout length, about equal to eye diameter. Caudal peduncle without keels. Dorsal-fin spines 26-32. Skin moderately smooth, scales small, not interspersed with spinous bony tubercles. Body depth 15-8 in standard length.
