All Halieutichthys Species: Underside of body naked. Pectoral-fin lobe attached to tail by skin. Lure in cavity above mouth very small, often obscured by puffy skin (FAO 2002).

Unique Characteristics: Tubercles on body well developed; row of tubercles almost always present dorsal to orbit; both inner and outer sphenotic tubercles well developed (Ho, et al. 2010).

Pancake Batfish. Halieutichthys aculeatus. Tubercles on body weakly developed; tubercles almost always absent dorsal to orbit; inner sphenotic tubercle strongly reduced and outer sphenotic tubercle either reduced or well developed. Outer sphenotic tubercle well developed. Spinelets on principal tubercles of disk margin short. Two narrow black bands extending fully across pectoral fin (Ho, et al. 2010).
