Hirundichthys affinis

Unique Characters: Pectoral fins grey, with pale triangular crossband. Caudal fin dusky while other fins are white. Pectoral fins very long, reaching beyond anal-fin base to or almost to caudal-fin base. Pectoral branch of lateral line absent. Pelvic fins long, reaching well beyond anal-fin origin, inserted nearer to anal-fin origin than pectoral-fin insertion. Origin of anal fin slightly before, under or, rarely, not more than 2 soft rays behind origin of dorsal fin. Dorsal fin usually with less or equal number of rays than anal fin. Juveniles not barbeled. Only the first pectoral-fin ray unbranched. Head length 3.9-4.4. Pectoral-fin length 1.35-1.6 in standard length.

Similar Species: Blackwing Flyingfish Hirundichthys rondeletii. Pectoral fin uniformly black with a pale, thin margin crossband. Pectoral fins very long, reaching beyond anal-fin base to or almost to caudal-fin base. Pectoral branch of lateral line absent. Pelvic fins long, reaching well beyond anal-fin origin, inserted nearer to anal-fin origin than pectoral-fin insertion. Origin of anal fin slightly before, under or, rarely, not more than 2 soft rays behind origin of dorsal fin. Dorsal fin usually with less or equal number of rays than anal fin. Juveniles not barbeled. First 2 pectoral-fin soft rays unbranched. Head length 4.5-5.0 in standard length. Pectoral-fin length 1.25-1.35 in standard length.
