Unique Characteristics: Dorsal fin with 10 spines and 14-17 soft rays; the interspinous fin membranes not incised. Anal fin with 3 spines and 6-13 rays. Soft dorsal and anal fins mostly naked. No scaly flap of skin joining upper part of pectoral-fin base to body. Pelvic fins reach to or beyond anus. Caudal fin emarginate. Most of upper edge of operculum free, not connected by skin to body. Preopercle without a large antrorse spine, not expanded posteriorly; the serrae at the angle only slightly enlarged. Middle opercle spine not reaching edge of operculum. Head length contained 2.3-3.3 times in standard length. Body deep, compressed, the depth contained 2.1-2.4 times (27-48%) standard length. Front nostrils variously shaped, but always closer to rear nostrils than to upper lip. Supramaxilla absent. Teeth fixed (not depressible).Upper jaw moderately protrusile; jaw teeth distinct; vomer and palatines with teeth. Posterior process of premaxilla broad and near tip of alveolar ramus. Lateral scale series about the same number (39-55) as the lateral-line scales (48-53). Gill rakers on first arch 6-8 on upper limb and 11-15 on lower limb. Body flank not barred. Body color whitish; plain white body; spot(s) present or absent on snout, caudal peduncle (FAO 2002).
