Unique Characteristics: Tail tip a hard or fleshy finless point. Gill openings entirely ventral or nearly so, unconstricted. All fins absent. Coloration without large spots. Head pores developed, 3 or 4 preopercular pores present. Anterior nostril a hole, not tubular; posterior nostril opening inside mouth, with or without a flap. Eye minute (FAO 2002).
