Unique Characteristics: Elongate fishes (to 2 m) with soft, flabby body; short trunk; tail elongate, compressed, and tapering. No fin spines; short-based single dorsal fin just behind head, with 8 to 12 soft rays; anal fin elongate and united with caudal fin, with combined total of 80-120 soft rays; pelvic fins jugular, adults with 2-4 soft rays visible, most rays minute and surrounded by fleshy skin, only 1 ray long and conspicuous (FAO 2002).
