Ogcocephalus parvus
Unique Characters: Underside of body completely covered by small prickle-like and/or rough cone-shaped scales. Pectoral-fin lobes separated from tail, forming distinct elbow. Lure prominent in cavity above mouth. Subopercular spine blunt or little developed or, if large, without spinelets. Rostrum horn-shaped, short. Pectoral rays 10/10 to 11/11. Rostrum short, length 1.7-4.0 in head depth. 3.2-8.5 in length of disk margin. Color and pattern highly variable. Tannish, pinkish, or yellowish to brownish dorsally. May be mottled or uniformly colored. Usually with patches of dark spots at shoulders. Pectoral fins pale to white at base with broad dark margins and white tips. Caudal fin colorless or with dark margin.
Similar Species: Longnose Batfish Ogcocephalus corniger. Underside of body completely covered by small prickle-like and/or rough cone-shaped scales. Pectoral-fin lobes separated from tail, forming distinct elbow. Lure prominent in cavity above mouth. Subopercular spine blunt or little developed or, if large, without spinelets. Rostrum horn-shaped, bizarrely long, upturned. Pectoral rays 10/10 to 11/11. Rostrum very long, length 0.9-1.6 in head depth, 1.6-3.1 in length of disk margin. Brown to gray with uniformly scattered, small pale spots dorsally. Spots may form reticulating pattern. Pale ventrally. Pectoral fins with broad, dark reddish brown to blackish margins and white tips. Caudal fin with broad dark reddish brown to blackish margin.
