Unique Characters: Dorsal, caudal, and anal fins dusky with pale edges. Jaw teeth in 1 or 2 series, forming a cutting edge. Body moderately elongate. Mouth horizontal or slightly oblique. Snout length only slightly less than, to somewhat greater than diameter of eye. Anterior nostrils free. Pectoral fin well developed; caudal fin present though sometimes reduced. Preanal length usually greater than 40% total length. Caudal fin short and tip of tail stiff. Posterior nostril below mideye level. Dorsal- and anal-fin rays unsegmented. Flange present on upper lip. Upper end of gill opening at or above upper end of pectoral-fin base.
