Mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus. Black spot on back in front of dorsal fin. Rounded caudal fin, blunt snout, and stout body. Dorsal fin origin slightly in front of anal fin origin. Male often has dark spot/blotch in dorsal fin. Gill rakers 9 or 10.

Marsh Killifish Fundulus confluentus. Pale, often golden spot on body at base of dorsal fin. Ocellated black spot in dorsal fin of female. Gill rakers 5. Caudal fin rounded. Occurs primarily in brackish or salt water.
