Unique Characteristics: Belly and interpelvic area with 1 or more highly modified (enlarged, often strong-spined) modified scales. Gill membranes narrowly joined, 40-50°. Snout blunt. Dorsum with distinct saddles. Subocular bar does not obviously curve posteriorly. Spinous dorsal fin 10-12. Cheek and breast naked. No black basicaudal spot. Tennessee River drainage basins.

Sickle Darter Percina williamsi. Belly and interpelvic area with 1 or more highly modified (enlarged, often strong-spined) modified scales. Gill membranes narrowly joined, 40-50°. Snout pointed, narrow. Dorsum uniformly pigmented, without distinct saddles. Subocular bar curves posteriorly. Spinous dorsal fin 14-16. Cheek and breast usually scaled. Small black spot at base of caudal fin. Restricted to the French Broad basin where it is extirpated.
