Unique CharactersLast ray of dorsal fin elongated. Usually 25-37 anal fin rays and 52-70 lateral scales. Blunt snout with subterminal mouth. Large purple-blue spot on shoulder. Deep notch at center of upper jaw. Lateral line absent. Breast with a sawtooth margin.

Threadfin Shad Dorosoma petenense. Last ray of dorsal fin elongated. Usually 17-27 anal fin rays and 40-48 lateral scales. Terminal mouth. Small dark spot on shoulder. No notch in upper jaw. Fins tend to be yellow.

Mooneye Hiodon tergisus. Lateral line present. Breast without a sawtooth margin. Anal fin origin under dorsal fin origin.  Found only in the lower French Broad River in Madison County.
