Unique Characters: Lateral line absent. Lateral line scales usually 34-38. Predorsal fin scale rows usually 12 or 13. Laterally compressed body shape in cross section. Anterior tip of upper lip generally near the level of ventral rim of eye. Side with single wide dark stripe in young, occasionally blotches in adult.

Anterior Cylindrical body shape in cross section. Anterior tip of upper lip generally well below level of ventral rim of eye. Side with single wide dark stripe in young, occasionally blotches in adult.
Spotted Sucker Minytrema melanops. Lateral line absent. In adult each scale with a dark spot at the base, forming longitudinal stripes.
