Unique Characters: Conspicuous large blotch/smudge at rear of dorsal fin. Other fins are clear. Short black ear flap. Wide dark vertical bars on the sides. Pectoral fin long and pointed. Mouth small. Long gill rakers.

Green Sunfish Lepomis cyanellus. Large mouth with upper jaw that extends back to middle of the eye. Black blotch present at rear of second dorsal fin and anal fin. Yellow to orange edges dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. Ear flap short and black with a pale margin. Pectoral fin short and rounded. Blue streaks on the cheek and opercle.

Redear Sunfish Lepomis microlophus. Dark smudge in rear of dorsal fin absent. Red spot on black ear flap. Short gill rakers.
