Unique Characters: Silver mid-lateral stripe. Snout about as long as eye diameter and rounded when viewed from above. Scales relatively large and outlined with black. Origin of first dorsal fin forward of origin of the anal fin. Anal rays usually 18 or fewer.

Southern Brook Silverside Labidesthes vanhyningi. Long, beak-like snout; triangular-shape when viewed from above. Two widely separated dorsal fins. First dorsal fin origin above anal fin origin. Pale green body with small scales. Male develops a red snout.
Waccamaw Silverside Menidia extensa. Snout rounded when viewed from above. Anal fin rays 19-21. Very similar in appearance but with a more slender body and only found in Lake Waccamaw.
