Unique Characters: White to orange triangle on upper edge of caudal fin. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins not edged with black. Short anal fin with 14-16 rays. Upper jaw extends forward of lower jaw. Restricted to Dan River and a few tributaries in Stokes County, Roanoke basin.

Similar Species: Margined Madtom Noturus insignis. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins edged with black. Long anal fin with 18-21 rays. Some specimens in the upper Dan River system are spotted.
