Unique Characters: Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins usually edged with black. Anal fin with 18-21 rays. Caudal fin base without dark blotch. Upper jaw extends forward of lower jaw. Except for the Watauga and New basins, restricted to Atlantic slope basins. Some specimens in the upper Dan River system are spotted.

“Cape Fear Broadtail” Madtom Noturus sp. Found only in Cape Fear drainage. Caudal fin base with dark blotch.  Fins not edged with black. Modally 16 anal rays and 60 caudal fin rays. Caudal fin length to height ratio of 1.42. Fins not edged with black. Caudal fin base with dark blotch
