Unique Characters: Dorsal-fin spines 13. Preopercular margin entire. Teeth conical in 2-4 rows. Upper and lower edges of caudal-fin base with 2 or 3 projecting spines sometimes inconspicuous. Dark blue dorsally from snout to posterior base of soft dorsal fin. Ventral area bluish white to grayish white. Outer portions of soft dorsal and anal fins yellow. Caudal fin yellow. Bright blue band runs from tip of snout to first dorsal fin base.

Sunshinefish Chromis insolata. Dorsal-fin spines 13. Preopercular margin entire. Teeth conical in 2-4 rows. Upper and lower edges of caudal-fin base with 2 or 3 projecting spines sometimes inconspicuous. Brownish to olivaceous on upper two-thirds of body. Ventral area whiteish to brownish. Blueline from tip of snout and above eyes may be present. Small dark spot at upper pectoral-fin base usually present. Outer portions of soft dorsal fin and caudal fin yellowish to pale.snout; body without dark bars or spots.

Purple Reeffish Chromis scotti. Dorsal-fin spines 13. Preopercular margin entire. Teeth conical in 2-4 rows. Upper and lower edges of caudal-fin base with 2 or 3 projecting spines sometimes inconspicuous. Adults bluish green to grayish blue with few to many bright blue spots on scales. Blue spots may blend to form V-shape on snout. Eyes always blue to bright blue crescent. Pectoral fins always transparent.
